In the coming months, UW Madison will participate in the ARL sponsored LibQUAL+ survey. There will be a campus wide survey conducted in late Spring 2004 to elicit user feedback on the quality of library service. In addition to the UW-Madison campus wide survey, Law Library and Wendt Engineering Library will be conducting their own surveys. Additionally, other UW System campus libraries will also be participating in the LibQUAL+ survey. The basic survey contains 22 core questions, a box in which respondents can make comments, some questions about respondent demographics and about the respondent's library use. The survey instrument is designed to measure the gap between the respondents' desired and expected level of library service and the level that is perceived as being received.

The LibQUAL+ survey is designed to assist libraries in soliciting , tracking, understanding, and acting upon users opinions of service quality. The program's centerpiece is a rigorously tested Web-based survey bundled with training to help participating libraries assess and improve library services, change organizational culture, compare themselves to their peers, and market the library. As of spring 2003, more than 400 institutions have participated in LibQUAL+, including colleges and universities, community colleges, health sciences libraries, law libraries, and public libraries.

Information about LibQual+ is available from the LibQual+ Web Site http://www.libqual.org/ which includes a LibQual+ FAQ as well as other background information about the survey and about the project.

Message sent to library staff from Ken Frazier, Jan. 22, 2004:

All staff,

This spring the UW-Madison Libraries (in addition to other system libraries) will be conducting a library service quality survey. The survey, called LibQual+ will provide essential information and data for us to use in planning for the future. The survey is part of a larger effort led by the Association of Research Libraries to measure library service quality and identify best practices.

We are doing this not only to assist us in planning for the future of the libraries, but also to help us identify our strengths and weaknesses in supporting the mission and vision of the libraries and the university.

The LibQual project will be carried out on this campus by a team of individuals comprised of Susan Barribeau, Sue Center (Law Library), Karl Debus-Lopez, Mary Folster, Elisabeth Owens, Rachel Watters (Wendt Library), and Tanner Wray. More information about the survey and its implementation will be shared at a Public Services Forum to be held on Tuesday, February 24, 2004, 1:30-3:00 p.m., 126 Memorial Library. Questions can be addressed to the group at lib-qual@library.wisc.edu or you may contact any of the team members directly. You will also find additional information on the Library Web site at: http://www.library.wisc.edu:4000/colldev/libqualuwmad.htm
